That is totally fascinating! What are some Romanian superstitions that I didn’t mention here? I love reading about folk beliefs, and it’s always funny in the US when talk gets around to them, since we’re all from such varied heritages. A lot of the folk beliefs seem to go back to even before Roman influence. My other grandma’s family is from Padstow, Cornwall, for instance, and on the first day of May they do THIS weird thing:

These are also common superstitions in my native country of Romania, as far away as you can get from Ireland without ending up on a different continent.
Since most of these folk beliefs harken back to the ancient Romans, it’s staggering to see the influence this ancient empire had even outside its borders (Dacia, ancient Romania, had been largely occupied by the Romans by 106 AD, but Hibernia, as Ireland was then known, remained outside the area of Roman control.) and how it’s brief (by historical standards) influence provides us now, almost two thousand years after the fact, with this kind of common denominator.

Reminds me of my late cat Sarah, the silent but deadly. Once we had her X-rayed and her gut looked like she had swallowed a long balloon. She was so full of methane it’s amazing she didn’t fly away.

Really I just need to drive a golf cart and wear clothes I make myself out of papertowels and sanitary pads. Sigh. Today’s Small Person Indignity: ordered shoes online, because nobody in Portland carries shoes in the size I wear except for Nordstrom’s, and even then they only get one in my size per style. Shoes arrived. They are the right length, but they are almost completely flat. I can’t squeeze my toes inside. This is a common problem. Apparently if you wear a size 4 or 5, you should also get all the bones in your feet removed.

Could you duct tape tin cans or something to the car pedals or have the pedals adjusted? It would increase the height so your feet could reach, but wouldn’t affect driving ability if they were secure (please try it out in an abandoned parking lot first!).

Front-loading washers are awesome, I agree with Laura! Even though I’m 5’7-5’8.

I too have been, what I like to call, is pigmy sized (they are under 5′. I am also your size, although my official height is 4’9 7/8″.

And yes those arm devices are way cool for getting things out of the wash, but my solution was to get a front loading washer.

There's a fairly obscure comic called Dreams of a Dog from 1990. Paul Ollswang drew and wrote it about his elkhounds. In one part, the female dreams of being an opera diva, and she wears a multi-bodice décolleté gown. I don't know if that would work in non-cartoon physics.

It may be that they used a different formula for the blood puddles, since it doesn’t have to drip viscously. As I recall, the puddles looked kind of like watered-down poster paint. It wasn’t even that distinct on the black floor, but the cast got down and wiped it up with rags that turned satisfyingly red.

If it had been corn syrup we would probably have heard the actors walking walking stickily around the stage.

The "cleaning up the set" business was played well in a production of Romeo and Juliet I saw a few years ago. It opens with a stage covered with puddles of blood, and the cast gets out there to wipe it up while they read the prologue. At the end (spoiler alert: lots of people die in Romeo and Juliet), we realize that the puddles of blood are in the same places as when it started.

Just so’s you know: these are sketched from life, in the dark, using a black rollerball pen so I could see my lines on the paper. I didn’t do much else to them other than drop a color behind the lines for some of them, so they’re still very scribbly, but you can get the gist. They actually do make a product like that to help women who have inverted nipples or just very flat nipples draw them out for breastfeeding. Look, I think that cat needs a cure for the worms it has. Seriously.
One older cat we had had them for a year or two and I dinn’t notice.
It was somewhat weird that all the kitten the other cat had simply just died, some were a real pain to watch, but it seemed random.

The cure is simple and important, these worms are migratory – that is: may choose to drill trough human (or animal) into liver, heart or other mourishing place.
